I need to do a better job coordinating between my blog and Instagram. A lot has happened this month, and I just realized none of it has been posted here. If you follow me on Instagram, you've already seen these pictures, therefore you may be excused :)
Otherwise here's what I've been up to:

1. More Taryn's blocks were sewn. I can't wait to hand quilt this one.
2. There was some actual weather here this month. It's unusual for us to get any kind of storminess in October, but the rain has been a welcome relief from the dry dusty heat.
3. The herbs I picked back in August are dried and I plan on putting them into little jars and giving some away for Christmas. Need to find some cute labels.
4. I followed a couple of different tutorials for a zippered pouch to make a large project bag and a small notions bag. I used some Japanese fabric from my stash and a floral from Rifle Paper Co.
You can find the instructions at Noodlehead and Jedicraftgirl. I haven't fiddled with zippers in quite a while, but I managed to survive the trauma of installing 2 of them. Now I want to make a few more of these bags as gifts.
5. Just finished reading Uprooted, which was good but just missed being really good by something that I can't put my finger on. Maybe the POV it was written in, or character development, I don't know, but if you've read it I 'd love to hear your thoughts. The yarn is Quince and Co. Osprey in Carrie's Yellow. I'm thinking of adding yarny embroidery to the ends of the scarf I'm making. Not sure how that's going to work on garter stitch, I think stockinette might be better, but it's worth a try.
Until next time!
Hey you guys I finished my shawl! First big knitted object for me and boy did I learn a few things along the way. Like a garter tab cast on, M1L and R, and spit splicing (always wanted to try that). A big shout out to my Mom for helping me through a few rough patches. I spent this entire past weekend on my butt knitting the last 2 sections, making fringe and blocking. The Shelter yarn was really nice to work with and smelled particularly sheepy :)
I'm still working on my nine patch quilt, and a crocheted blanket, but am itching to cast on the next knitting project, which will either be another shawl or a hat. I ordered some yarn to make an Arika too, but maybe I'll wait until it arrives and finish up the quilt first.
The last two pictures are of a notions bag, which is made out of some kind of recycled vinyl, and is virtually indestructible. I love that aqua sewing machine. The fabric was bought at my local fabric store which I just heard is going out of business at the end of the year. That puts the next closest fabric shop about 45 minutes away. Bummer.
Hope you all have a good week. I have NOTHING going on this week, first time in a long time, except an appointment to get the septic tank pumped on Friday, which is kind of crappy hahaha. That's how exciting my life is. Here's my first Fall finish, a small Irish chain table runner made from cheddar scraps and Kona snow. It measures 24.5 x 28.5. I machine quilted it and tied it with brown Perle cotton, but when it came out of the dryer almost all my ties were undone. Dang it. They looked cute too. I had to pull them all out. For the moment it's going to stay as is. Who am I kidding. It will stay like this forever. Moving on.
These blocks have been staring at me for 2 months now. I've been hunting for a background fabric for the setting squares and side triangles, but nothing felt right. I even bought 2 yards of Kaufman Essex linen blend online, in a dark charcoal, and was so sure it would look awesome, that I immediately cut into it and threw the squares up next to the 9 patches. Bleh. As you can see I opted for an off white background. Kona snow again. Typically my default color of which I am trying to get away from using so much of it, because all my quilts are starting to look the same to me. I have a whole bolt of this in my closet, so I just caved in and used it.
That charcoal fabric would have been great as a tunic or dress, but because I cut it up I now have twelve 8" squares and a small amount of yardage. That means I can make a very short top with 12 pockets. Sounds about right.

I started this ripple because it's been in my head at least 3 years and it needed to be made. When the book Homespun Style by Selina Lake came out there was a granny blanket on page 71 in a similar colorway and I wanted it with my whole being. Okay that's pretty dramatic, but I loved it! If you have followed my blog for any length of time, you may have noticed that I hardly use purple or green in anything, let alone together in the same project. I like other things people make with these colors, but I rarely ever reach for them first. Time to cast off color prejudices and try the other crayons in the box.
I'm using the neat ripple pattern by Lucy at Attic 24. The pattern is so incredibly easy that I regularly screw it up every 2nd or 3rd row. I have ripped back at least half of this blanket so far. Mistakes happen when you're not paying attention and you're crocheting at the speed of sound, light, or how fast I run when being chased by a mad dog.

And finally, after seeing so many mini quilts on Instagram by Temecula Quilt Co., I impulsively bought the online pattern, Taryn's Baskets, downloaded, printed, dove into my fabric, cut, pressed and in just under a couple of hours had completed two 5" squares. The seam ripper is working overtime on this one. My points are finishing too close to the edge, and most will have the tips cut off when I add the setting squares. Grrrr. Taking apart 1 1/2" squares is not one of my strengths. Buying things online apparently is.
Here's to learning by our mistakes. Cheers :)
Yet another scrap quilt from my bottomless pit of a scrap bucket. It doesn't look like your typical log cabin style quilt, but that's the method I used to construct the blocks. I squared them up with my 9.5 inch square ruler, added sashing with "points" and a scrappy border. It measures out at 43x43, which is fine because I already have a gazillion throw size quilts, and it's nice to make one for the fun of it and not worry about the size. Before the binding was finished, I was already pulling fabrics for the next quilt. It seems my sewing mojo has returned. I even dusted off the old featherweight.
In between quilts, I'm working on my Farmhouse shawl. It's a very relaxing knit, nothing too challenging for a newbie knitter like me. I have this month to finish it up as it doesn't cool down properly here until October and I'm looking forward to wearing it.

My oldest daughter teaches 3rd grade, and in the morning she hands out "warm-ups", half sheets of paper with a few math problems or vocabulary words. Something quick to occupy the class while they settle in. My crafting lately has consisted of warm -ups. It's been a while since I've flung myself headlong into a pile of fabric to make a large quilt, and that's okay. When I'm ready I'll know it.

Lately it's been all about smallish makes, portable knitting or crochet. Easy projects to keep my crafty muscles flexed, requiring minimal mess or time on my part. Like the long pincushion above. I always wanted one to lay at the base of my sewing machine, so I whipped this one up with scraps of bark cloth, linen and Liberty fabric. When the middle daughter came back from a visit to the State Fair this summer, she proudly presented me with a small bag of wool from the sheep shearing. It still had dirt and sticks in it. I swear my kids get me. Anyway I stuffed it into the pincushion, so now it has extra magical powers.
There is an abundance of rosemary, thyme and sage in my garden right now, so I cut the plants back real hard and have them drying upstairs in the loft on pieces of paper towel. I always save small glass spice jars and those have been cleaned and ready to fill with this years herbs. Then I ordered lavender, wormwood (repels moths), dried orange peel and mint from Mountain Rose herbs to blend with my rosemary. To this I added sweet orange essential oil, and I stuffed the concoction into sachets made with vintage cotton and some recycled linen from an old skirt of mine. There's a tutorial on Purl Bee if you want to make some for yourself. I cut into some Liberty fat quarters, and those will be sewn next.
I started this in the middle of June thinking it would make a great summer project. Well I was right. It went with me to my mom's chemo appointments, on the train to Portland last month, and any time there was a road trip. In fact this thing has been practically living in the car. Since it was one color, and you crochet one square at a time, it was quite portable and there weren't many ends to weave in!
I used Knit Picks organic cotton worsted which was amazingly soft, not anything like the kitchen twine I've struggled with when making dishcloths. The pattern was free over on byHaafner, and there's a handy little chart you can print off if you like that sort of thing. I found it helpful, although it was easy enough to memorize once you made a few squares. All the details are on my Ravelry page.
There hasn't been much sewing going on around here. I broke down and bought a quilting hoop and a nimble thimble and am trying my best to hand quilt, but it's slow. The leather nimble thimbles are a great idea, but I seem to be in between sizes. The medium was too big and kept slipping off. When it finally flew across the couch and hit the dog, I decided to order a small. Now that one is too tight. This is a bit like Goldilocks testing out the beds.
I bought some goodies in Portland at Knit Purl and have started knitting the Farmhouse shawl, and it's so fun! Probably another reason why the quilting has taken a back seat.
When I was in Portland last week, my sister and I walked into a posh little boutique on Alder St. to have a look around. It was the kind of shop that would drain the pocketbook in minutes. The wares however, were quite beautiful. Table tops displayed fine gauge cotton tee shirts, soft wool sweaters, wide legged pants, linen napkins, carved wooden candlesticks and large coffee table books. Most of the clothing they carried were in shades of navy, black, cream and tan. If you wanted a few nice basic pieces to start a minimalist wardrobe, this was the place to get them. I fell in love with this little creamer by a local artist and brought it home with me.

I also spied a quilt on sale for just over $300. It was a color block quilt in cream, black and gray that fit in with the shop's aesthetic. I kept looking at it. Thinking about it long after we left. Obsessing about it's plain simple design. In fact on the train ride home, an Amish (or maybe Mennonite) family joined us in the dining car and their starched white caps, and dark somber clothes reminded me of the quilt again. I couldn't wait to get home and make my own version.
It only took a few days to put together as I already had everything I needed. And thank goodness. A trip to the fabric store would have ruined my momentum. The Lotta Jansdotter fabric I used for the backing has been in my stash for about 2 years. I never wanted to use it because I loved it so much. Really that makes no sense. I need to start incorporating these pieces into my projects instead of hoarding it. It's not doing any good folded up in the cupboard.
On Thursday I'm getting on the Amtrak Coast Starlight train and heading up to Portland Oregon. I took the train once before, from Philadelphia to Washington DC, but I was by myself and think I napped most of the way. I barely remember it. This time I'll be sharing a sleeper car with my youngest sister in a space the size of Harry Potter's cupboard under the stairs, and I imagine there will be lots of giggling and snorting into the wee hours. Portland, bless that beautiful city, will only be about 75 degrees when I get there. I will be leaving 100 degrees behind at home. I might have to dig my jeans out of the "winter" side of the closet.
I finished 5 squares on my popcorn stitch blanket so far. I know the picture is only showing 4, but it was hard to photograph an odd number, so you get the idea. I'm hoping to make a few more on the train.
I had some help from the dog going through my scrap bin to make several nine patch blocks. I want to set them on point but I'm having a difficult time deciding on a background color. Usually I reach for a cream color (safe), but I feel like all my quilts are starting to look the same. I might need to take a chance on this one and branch out of my comfort zone.
Lastly I'm making a linen project bag to take on the train, and I decided to work a cross stitch motif on the front, found in Alicia Paulson's Embroidery Companion book. Since she lives in Portland, I thought it would be a fun reminder of my upcoming trip. Have a great week wherever you are!Lynnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15467650220067047943noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6474107277810710594.post-21735838644845272192016-07-01T14:10:00.000-07:002016-07-01T14:10:40.100-07:00Self Sewn

Summer is in full swing now. I can tell because my air conditioner is broken. A temporary fix is in place, but it looks like we need to buy a new one. Meanwhile, outside there are plants with minds of their own popping up in areas where I did not originally intend them to be popping. The morning glories are relentless, twinning around my swiss chard, green onions, or anything that stands in one place too long. I pull them out to get at my vegetables, but there are dozens of little seedlings, laughing up at me, waiting in line to take their place.
A row of sunflowers towers above my tomato plants, casting shade where I do not want it, but I don't have the heart to rip them out. I tried to grow sunflowers from seed last year, but they didn't take hold very well, so I guess they showed me who's boss by moving themselves to a different part of the garden that they like much better.
The compost pile is now bursting with spaghetti squash. I must have thrown the remnants of a cooked squash in there at some point. The long vines have crashed through the wire farm fencing and were last seen marching eastward across the pasture.
And speaking of pasture, some kind of wild, pale blue flower has sprouted out there, along with yellow mustard, all courtesy of the additional rain from last winter.

Now onto the fun stuff. A few years back, I saw a yarny blanket that made me swoon, and set out to make one of my own. I crocheted 6, twenty round granny squares and sewed them together, ending up with a blanket roughly 40x60 inches. It's been sitting for ages waiting on those ends to be weaved in, and I'm so happy it's finally done!
We've been really busy lately helping the oldest daughter pack up her apartment and move. While that was going on the boy/man came home briefly from university ( in between regular and summer classes) and we cleaned out his bedroom and packed away his childhood. But before that could happen, I had to tidy up the garage to make space for sports equipment, video games and high school yearbooks. I've dropped off so much at the Goodwill lately, they must see me coming and think my house is a never ending bottomless pit of All the Stuff.
I tell you what, my 50 something body can't take too much more of this moving and packing, especially since the weather is hovering around 100 degrees or higher for the next 5 days.
Ah summer, how I want to love you here in Northern California, but I want to experience you in Alaska, or Maine, where I imagine a light sweater is needed when the sun goes down, people eat supper outside, and you can still wear long pants and shirts with sleeves in them.
There have been beautiful sunsets here though, and the grasses have dried to that rich California gold color. I get to pick wild blackberries on my morning walks, make fresh lemonade from the lemons off my tree and float on a raft in the pool looking up at a sky so blue it makes you ache inside.
All that kind of makes up for the upper lip and boob sweat, the constant hum of the AC, and the inability to do anything outside between lunch time and 9:00pm without melting your face off.

Enough complaining about the weather. Guess what? I finally joined the Instagram crowd (I resisted for a long time). I still prefer blogging because I love the written word, the stories, the connection. It's quicker to post something on Instagram, a nice picture, two sentences punctuated by a dozen emoji's and you're done. But man you can really get sucked into the looking and spend hours of time on there! I'm just figuring out how to navigate around and so far it's been fun. I don't have too many posts up yet, but if you want to visit, I'm at lifeofreilly58.
In between the packing I'm grateful this week for some quiet moments to practice my knitting, and continue sewing more of my drunkards path blocks. I've been able to build up a nice little pile so far. However this is looking to be a 3 year quilt, as I started these blocks last year and it doesn't appear I'll be finishing any time this year.
Anyone got a summer project started? Besides my white crocheted blanket, I've been itching to try some embroidery and I have 2 new books to read. I'm down for anything really, as long as it doesn't involve packing tape and a truck :)

I changed my mind on two of my projects. I was dragging my feet about finishing them, so I took a good hard look at why the feet were dragging. Something wasn't right and I figured they needed to be tweaked just a little in order to regain my interest. So out came the seam ripper for the quilt, and frogging commenced on the cotton blanket.
I originally set the quilt blocks in my usual standby, Kona snow. You can see them here. The white background was bugging me so I remade them with a tan and cream shirting fabric which softens the blocks somehow and gives them a little more interest. The quilt is now almost done!

The cotton blanket from my last post was a simple sc, ch1, sc pattern, that was soothing to work, but a bit boring. The plan was to make a solid cream colored organic cotton blanket, but I was constantly fighting with myself so I wouldn't add a colored stripe somewhere. Maybe what I really craved was more texture. When I spied this blanket, and this one, I ripped out my boring one and started the new squares immediately. BAM! Instant crochet fun! I love working on this pattern.
There are just enough popcorn stitches to keep this fun. Also the Knit Picks Simply Cotton Worsted has exactly the amount of yarn per skein to make one 10 round block (H hook).
My daughter pointed out that both the crocheted block and the quilt block share similar shapes. Hmm. Even weirder they both measure out at 13 1/2 inches.
I think I'm heading in the right direction.Lynnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15467650220067047943noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6474107277810710594.post-68145496670732401942016-06-02T10:51:00.000-07:002016-06-02T10:51:30.336-07:00Catching Up

Gosh what a crazy couple of weeks it's been. I'm mentally pooped out. No blogging, no making, (well a little bit on the cotton blanket up there but that's it), no fun. I spent 2 separate days with 2 different family members at the Emergency room. One of them was on Memorial Day weekend, so you can just imagine. Both my Dad and my daughter are now fine, but there's 12 hours of my life I'd rather not repeat.
I hadn't mentioned this before, but my Mom had surgery back in March to remove a pancreatic tumor. Looks like they got everything, but she started chemotherapy treatment on Tuesday. I will be taking her once a week for 3 weeks, then a week off. This will go on for about 6 months.
She's such a trooper. So far she's tolerating the chemo pretty well and is in great spirits, still walking 2 miles a day. I hope I can say the same when I'm 79 years old.

I did get some new yarn in the mail which is always a treat. Last week was Crochet Week at Quince and Co., and they released 5 crochet patterns to drool over. I ended up ordering 3 skeins of Piper which is a light fingering weight in the color Sweetwater, and 2 shawl patterns.
Two new magazines came as well, Taproot, and the first edition of Making. In Taproot, they have tutorials for things like arm knitting, or how to season your cast iron skillet. This issue (18) included recipes for Moroccan chicken with preserved lemons, cheesemaking and and herbal remedies like bug balm. I really enjoy their short stories/essays.
Making is full of beautiful photography, knitting patterns, embroidery, cross stitching, sewing, even recipes.
So, relaxing with a good magazine, a little crochet and iced tea is working wonders. Cooking always helps recharge my battery somehow too, and I made some pasta yesterday and added chard and basil from the garden (so much chard!. you pick it and by the time you carry it into the house, it has grown 20 new leaves.). Things are slowly drifting back to normal. Soon I will feel less like this....

and more like getting back to the sewing room. 105 degrees predicted for tomorrow. Anybody want to come over for a swim?
I'm not sure if you want to call what I'm doing "progress" or quilting myself into a corner. When I make a visual list of everything I'm working on/want to work on, it's kind of overwhelming. I actually left 2 other quilt projects out of this post, and will talk more about them later. This is enough even for me.
Last week I drove about 45 minutes into Sacramento to visit the Quilters Corner fabric store. I don't get there very often but when I do, you can bet I make it worth my while. I bought some neutral backgrounds, a few Karen Kay Buckley tools, 2 Quiltmania magazines, a handful of fat quarters to feed the stash and a Kaffe Fassett bundle (last picture). They didn't carry a lot of modern quilting fabric, it was heavy on the reproductions and batiks, but they had some fun classes going on, awesome samples hanging up, a large supply of Aurifil thread and other notions, even wool for applique. It was a great couple of hours spent by myself, and I stopped on the way home for an iced tea and a sushi roll from Mikuni's (I love their Marilyn Monroll, yum!)

The snowball quilt now measures about 27 x 29 and I think I'm going to add a border of flying geese next. I'll just keep going until it feels like it's done. The dark blue fabric was pulled because I want to make an indigo quilt, maybe with some sashiko stitching. I'm still dreaming about that one.
I also received 2 little hangers from Temecula Quilt Co. They're perfect for mini quilts.

Sadly the Killdeer eggs from my garden disappeared 2 days after I posted about them. I'm not surprised, since the nest was sitting out in the open, unprotected. There are a lot of cats, hawks and raccoons around here, and I discovered a hole in the ground just a few feet from the nest (snake?) Could have been any of them. There wasn't an egg shell or feather left behind. Just, Poof! Gone.

So today it's going to be 97 degrees, and like usual, I'm trying to outrun the heat. Everything has been watered early this morning, and I just finished vacuuming and mopping floors. Soon the air conditioner will kick in, and that's my signal to start sewing. I've got lots to do, some of it I like, some of it I don't. I'm not complaining. It could be worse. I could have been born as a Killdeer egg.

But beyond the green lies an area where we used to keep the chickens. I've been slowly cleaning it up to add more plants, maybe grapes or an orange tree. It looks like this....

But wait, let's zoom in a bit.

Do you see the eggs?
They belong to a Killdeer. And Mrs. Killdeer was not happy that I was walking around her nest. If you want to call it a nest. More like a shallow depression in the dirt. She was quite nervous and wanted me to follow her away from her babies.

So she pulled the broken wing act, like on the Discovery Channel.
Not going to work on me lady. I saw that episode.
Nevertheless she continued the fake job.

After a few minutes of me standing perfectly still, except for the sweat dripping down my face, she cautiously came back to hover over her eggs. I was about 12 feet away, on the other side of a fence.
I left her alone at this point. Probably enough torture for one day. Looks like I won't be gardening in this part of the yard until those eggs hatch.
Meanwhile I sewed all these little snowballs together and now I'm just staring at it. I don't know what to do. Wait for some inspiration or just quilt it and sew on a binding and call it done. Hmmmm.
We've had the nicest rain showers this last week, with thunder rumbling in the distance for dramatic effect. I haven't had to water the garden as often, which is nice, but the weeds love the rain too, so the battle continues. We are slowly moving out of our nice Enjoy It While You Can spring weather phase and will soon be entering into the blistering hot, Kill All the Plants summer phase, which I endure for about one month, then by July I'm in the house with the air conditioner on drinking buckets of iced tea. I really want to try and embrace summer this year (I say this every year), take part in more outdoor/summer activities, but it's hard for me. I inevitably melt into a sweaty limp puddle at backyard barbecues and theme parks, clutching a cold drink in a death grip, crazed eyes darting about for a seat in the shade, my hair plastered around my head like a wet dish cloth.
So attractive. Meanwhile everyone else continues to party on, seemingly unfazed by the heat. Sigh.
Must buy more pool floaty toys. And cold beer. And a short haircut.

On the sewing front, I haven't been very diligent lately. I made a few scrap improv blocks and will probably make some kind of quilt with them, but for now they're just hanging out on the design wall patiently waiting their turn. Instead of sewing I've been obsessed with listening to knitting pod casts and really learning a lot. However the patterns I'm drawn to are made with fingering weight yarn and toothpicks, and I'm struggling. Maybe for now I'm better off learning with worsted or dk weight and bigger needles? I'm both impressed and intimidated by people who jump right in there and whip up a pair of socks a week after they learn to cast on. Knitting feels painfully slow to me, and you have to really pay attention. Example : K2, yo, knit to marker, yo, sm, k1, sm, knit to last 2 stitches, yo, k2 stitches, touch your nose with your tongue, and scratch your belly with your big toe. Repeat rows two through nineteen, 175,678 times or until your eyes cross, the phone rings or the dog jumps in your lap in which case you're basically screwed. If your lucky the damn markers will stay where you put them and you can find your place and start over.
Possibly I have some kind of knitting attention deficit disorder. Or knitting commitment disorder. Whatever it is, it makes me doubt myself. I run back to the comfort of my crochet hook and think "do I really need another craft, maybe I will just stick with crochet and quilting?"
Again, must buy more cold beer.
Anyway last week I had a give away for a quilt pattern and a stack of 5" squares from my stash. Pam at CreativeCrazyGirl won, and I hope she can use the extra scraps in her stash, and maybe try out that pattern! Thanks to everyone who took time to leave a comment. It's nice to have so many lovely blogging friends out there. Hope you all have time to make something fun this weekend :)
A second South Bay Shawlette, this time in an ombre merino fingering yarn from Two Black Sheep on Etsy. I used an H hook and could not put this down. Each row slowly bled into that darker berry color and I enjoyed it right to the end. I added a final row of picot stitches because I wanted to tease out as much of the darker color possible before I ran out of yarn. Early on I was worried about the colors pooling or looking lopsided like I had spilled my Kool-Aid on it, but it played out beautifully. I gave it a brief soak before blocking, more like a quick dip really, and it bled a little (yikes!) When I rolled it in a towel there was no color transfer so all was right in the universe.
Oh and Meredith finished hers (she's fast!), so go take a look at her gorgeous shawl!
Now that that's done, I can get back to some quilting. I made this top a few weeks ago but haven't got a backing for it yet.
I had this collection of fat quarters (Bari J. for Art Gallery Fabrics I think) sitting around forever, and finally stumbled on a pattern that would suit it. It's basic strip piecing, cutting, then sewing rows. So easy it almost makes itself. Finished size is 54 x 70.

Somehow I ended up with 2 of these patterns. If you would like the extra one (and I will throw in a small stack of 5 inch squares from my stash) leave a comment and I will pick a winner. If you're a no-reply blogger please add your e-mail address. Thanks for visiting! So I started another South Bay Shawlette. Meredith is making one too, and when I told her I was thinking of making a second one, she said why don't you join me? And just like that I did.
You see I'd just received a ball of yarn from Two Black Sheep. It's a fingering weight, hand dyed ombre merino in the color You Had Me at Hello. The name alone was enough reason for me to order some. It comes all nicely wound up for you, just like in the picture. You can pull it from the middle or from the outside, your choice. Strangely enough, that little ball of yarn with it's dark berry colored center makes me hungry for two childhood desserts.

Dessert number 1
When I was a kid my mom often made us tapioca pudding. She'd serve it in a little glass dish with a teaspoon of strawberry or raspberry jam plopped into the middle. I remember pulling a little of that jam onto my spoon along with the pudding as I ate towards the center. I'm quickly crocheting my way to the jam blob in the middle of that skein. It's quite motivating.

Dessert number 2

When was the last time you made a jellyroll? My mom and grandma made them often and they were always a treat filled with the same aforementioned jam. However, no one could make a jellyroll like Olga's mom.
Years ago, when I was a young single mom living in the San Francisco Bay Area at the foot of the San Mateo bridge in a very windy town called Foster City (it was always a challenge to try and light the barbecue there let me tell you) there was a family from Czechoslovakia that lived in the apartment next door. The kids, Olga and Thomas, were about the same age as my girls and they would play together after school. To this day I can't remember their mom's name. Heck I don't think I ever got it right back then either, because it was difficult to pronounce and it often embarrassed me that I couldn't grasp it. My kids just called her Olga's mom and it stuck. When Olga's mom realized I had no husband, was raising two kids on my own and working full time, she went into complete mother hen mode. The jellyrolls began to arrive at my door almost weekly. Here was a woman who barely spoke any English, was alone in an apartment all day in a strange country, taking care of her own husband and kids, and she wanted to take care of me too.
No wonder those jellyrolls tasted so damn good, They were full of kindness!
I made one the other day, from the beat up pages of my old Betty Crocker cookbook and thought of her. Hey Olga's mom? If you're out there somewhere - this shawl is for you.
I finished the Hugs and Kisses baby quilt for the newest member of our clan, squeezing it in just before his due date. This week my husband and I thought it would be a good idea to take turns getting the flu and I dragged along, hand sewing the binding down, which seemed to require way more effort than usual. Funny how even the smallest task can feel monumental when you're sick.
So I washed all the germs off it, took some pictures, wrapped it up and sent it on it's way to Canada. Happy Birth-Day little boy. It measures 33x41, made entirely from scraps. You can find a link to the X block in my previous post Happy Place.
I also just finished another quilt top NOT made with my scraps(shocking), but from a fat quarter stack that's been hanging around for a while. I have a few of these hoarded piles of fabric from the same fabric ranges, and they need to come out of the cupboard and become something. Anything.

So. Onward. To the next quilt. There may even be a give-away involved.
Also just downloaded The Glassblower onto my kindle. I love starting a new book as much as starting a new quilt!
My mind is a jungle of ideas. My garden is, well, a jungle. I'm still running back and forth between inside and out, trying to accomplish everything at once. Though Easter Sunday forced me to slow down. A quiet brunch with my tribe and an afternoon nap. Some knitting on the back porch.
Those little snowball blocks up there are slowing me down as well. I started out sewing them on the machine, but they were pulling and bunching up at the seams, so I tried a few by hand and I was really pleased with how they turned out. I highly recommend gathering your supplies in a little basket and hand piecing out in the spring air and sunshine.
In case you want to make some, here's what I'm doing.

From an assortment of dark/medium and light squares cut some 3" blocks

Now cut 1 3/8" blocks, 4 of the same color (light or dark) I know it makes my eyeballs hurt just typing that number, never mind cutting them to that size.

Place 4 matching tiny light blocks on the corners of a 3" dark/medium block
Place 4 matching tiny dark/medium blocks on the corners of the 3" light blocks.
Here's a tutorial on how to sew them.
I didn't mark my little squares first before sewing. Instead, I folded them in half diagonally and pressed across the fold with my fingernail. This leaves a faint press line that you can follow when sewing.
Arrange the finished blocks alternating light corners against dark corners (I have 4 sewn together in the bottom right side of the picture)
I have no idea what I'm going to make. I feel like if I give this project a name or commit to a specific size, it will spoil the magic of making them.

The yarn is from Quince & Co. I've been wanting to try out the color Carrie's Yellow, and finally went ahead and ordered some. When it won't get out of your head, you might as well give in to it.
I'm thinking maybe a very long 1x1 rib scarf to go with all those neutrals hanging in my closet. A simple scarf from beautiful yarn.

Here's a few links of things I've been into this last week, in case your bored:

I bought this pattern, and this one, and this one too. Haven't made any of them yet.
I REALLY want to go to Squam for my birthday in September. Anyone going???
The jungle grows.
Off the hook is Southbay Shawlette in Malabrigo sock. The color is Impressionist sky. Those people sure know how to name their yarn. This shawl took one whole skein using a 7 (4.5) hook with a few yards to spare. There have been about a bazillion of these made on Ravelry, with all types of yarns.
In my cupboard are 2 balls of Cascade alpaca lace in a pretty apricot color that may just turn into another one. They say this is called a potato chip pattern. You can't make just one.

I'm building a baby quilt using blue/green scraps and my old white standby Kona snow (here is a tutorial for the X block). This one needs to be shipped off to Canada sometime in April. That means I have to get to it and not start anything else. And of course there are so many quilts I want to make right now! The sun is out, the birds are singing, the garden is calling and all of it is fueling a creative furnace in my head. There are clothes hanging on the line, seedlings ready to plant, and patio furniture to be re-painted. There is a dress pattern on the way, a pile of soft cotton on the shelf waiting for a chance to become a new frock and a delicate crocheted wrap about half way done. I'm bursting with ideas and am not able to corral them fast enough. Every morning I stand in the hallway, holding my coffee cup, trying to decide whether to go outside or into the sewing room. Amazing what a few days of sunshine can do for the soul.
Spring is a short season around here. But when it arrives, it surely knocks your socks off.
Well, the socks are officially off.

I finished this quilt for my niece two days before her birthday party. Last month I delivered the Hudson Bay camp blankets to her little boys for their birthdays, and she loved the deer fabric I used and asked if she could have a quilt made up of woodland animals. I told her where to look online for fabric so she started a Pinterest board. I then followed her board and was able to find a lot of the fabrics she liked, then added to it from my stash. Now the three of them have new quilts! The oldest boy (aged 7) sleeps with his every night. He told his mom that he wants it underneath the top comforter, in case robbers came into the house, they wouldn't see his quilt and try to steal it. That's quite a compliment! (or they need to move out of that neighborhood ha ha)
Anyway, Ashley's quilt is made using 6.5 inch squares laid out in a nine patch pattern with 1.5 inch lattice in between. I think it measures 60 x 64. It had to be simple and fast, and patchwork always does the trick.
I just started a blanket for my cousin in Canada who is getting ready to have her first baby in April. It's turning out cute so far, and is all from my stash and very scrappy.
Stay tuned.Lynnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15467650220067047943noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6474107277810710594.post-42186821626207247322016-02-23T19:28:00.000-08:002016-02-23T19:51:42.484-08:00Plans

This morning I went out to run some errands and ended up at the grocery store. Now I don't know about where you live, but the food store where we shop has trained their young employees to smile politely and then launch into the standard question game while bagging your groceries.
Here it comes.

Hello, how are you doing today?
Did you find everything you were looking for?
Would you like paper or plastic bags? (this one is so automatic, they don't even notice the pile of bags I've brought from home)

You can tell they are somewhat uncomfortable with this interrogation, and I don't mind all that much. I feel kind of sorry for these kids, coercing customers into small talk. It feels weird. What manager thought this was a good idea? Anyway most of the time I chat back, but sometimes I just want to get my groceries and go. Like today. I'm trapped at the counter, the basket slowly emptying, lost in my own thoughts, mentally ticking things off my list, and then...

So what do you have planned for the rest of your day?

Ugh. I thought we were done. In my head I'm saying...
Really? Do you really want to know? I doubt it. You're 18 and I'm 57. Nothing I could possibly do today would be remotely interesting to you. (No kidding, I once had someone ask me what I had planned for the weekend. On a Monday. It literally stumped me for a second, as it was a week away and I had no clue). Instead I usually murmur something about chores or going for a swim, walk, etc.
But I wonder what they would do if I answered their question honestly?
Maybe like this...

Well I need to hurry and get home because our new rider mower is being delivered. The old mower finally broke and the grass has grown so high we loose sight of the little dog when he runs after the ball. The yard is looking very furry indeed. Maybe, instead of a new mower, we should get a horse like our neighbor. It would be a good deal quieter than a mower and much more pleasant to look upon. Plus I could use their poop in my garden. What do you think? Hmmm. But, as soon as I get home, I'm going to put all these groceries away. Then whip up the sauce for the fish tacos we're having for dinner. When that's done I'm going to make a fruit salad.
While all these delicious flavors are coming together in the fridge, I'm going to kick the dogs outside so I can pin baste a quilt on the floor in the living room. Then next comes the quilt binding, cut and pressed just so. I need to start quilting immediately, because it has to be completed for my niece's birthday party this weekend. I know! Not much time left right?
Then I have to finish sorting through my books in the sewing room and tidy the shelves. When that's done I might add a few rows to the blanket I started crocheting with Knit Picks organic cotton yarn. The weight of it is lovely and I can't wait to use it this spring.
I'm also going to try and get a picture of a hummingbird that sits at the tip top of our tallest redwood tree and sings for a mate.....
What's that?
You just got called to another checkstand?
You're not going to help me out to my car?
But don't you want to hear about my plans for after dinner?
Smile politely.
Maybe next time then.

I like the way February is starting out. Lots of little busy work and errands to run, but no pressure from the outside world. Rain showers and sunshine mixed together, dogs snoozing on the couch, quiet afternoons spent playing with yarn and fabric.
I devoted three whole days to cleaning my sewing room. What a scene that was. Rather like a police raid. No warning, just rush in and take prisoners. Every closet, box, bin, drawer and bag was dumped out, searched and sorted. Spread across the floor, the mess threatened to burst out into the hallway, smothering anything in its path (remember that old movie called The Blob? It just kind of rolled around and sucked up cars, people, movie theaters. Like that). My husband would come in every once in a while, look around at the chaos and walk out without saying a word. Smart man. I'm sure he was wondering about dinner, or the lack of it.
I actually had to leave the room at one point because the fabric/yarn dust caused an allergic sneezing fit, complete with watery eyes. There was talk of hazmat suits. Whatever. I sent three large bags to the Goodwill (should have been more), and painstakingly folded all my fabric and lovingly tucked it back into the drawers. It was a joy to behold. Really though, I give it about 4 months before it turns back into a dog's breakfast.

Now I need a new book to read. Any recommendations? I want to keep track of everything I've read this year and so far in January there were five. Katherine, The Hands on Home, Big Magic, The Martian, and Gaia's Garden. The last one sounds like it could be a romance or fantasy novel, but it's really about understanding Permaculture and how to incorporate it into your yard. Cool stuff. To be honest I didn't finish The Martian. I ended up watching the movie (good!) so there was no motivation to keep reading. Just as well. The book had several pages of technical scientific NASA speak, which I skipped over with regularity. I hope some day I don't find myself in a dire situation, where everyone is about to perish, and I am kicking myself for not reading the paragraphs on how to properly release hydrazine over an iridium catalyst and turn it into N2 and H2. Then burn it without blowing myself up.
Oh well. I can make a quilt. Does that count?

Magically I have finished another quilt. This one has been hibernating for a while (talk about slow quilting), but I've been really pushing to finish up old projects before they get labeled as "vintage".

The pattern is from Making History, Quilts and Fabric from 1890-1970 by Barbara Brackman, and is called Georgia Tulip. It's in the last chapter which covers the 1950's to 1970's. This is a time period I can relate to since this is when I grew up and now, apparently my age is heading into the vintage category. When I was shopping the other day a clerk asked me sheepishly if I was a senior. Ahem. The cut off was 60 years old. Since I'm 3 years away from said senior discount, and the girl was all of about 18, I forgave her. She was trying to give me a deal, but please, don't rush me. I will gladly give up the discount to retain every bit of those three years. Needless to say I went out and bought some new moisturizer and eye cream after that.
Anyway, the original was 35 x 31 inches. I added a half square triangle border, then a floral border, which brought mine up to 43.5 x 43.5. There is both hand and machine quilting, and the tulips were paper pieced then appliqued down onto the blue blocks. The backing is voile.

When I went to the fabric store to buy the floral border, I told the clerk (different one this time. older than me. not that it matters or anything) that I was also going to add a border of hst's that were leftover from a different quilt. The conversation went something like this:

Clerk: Well you can't just add those on. How do you know they will fit? You have to do the math!

Me: (Channeling my inner Gwen Marston) No I'm just going to sew them together and then trim them to fit.

Clerk (looking at me aghast. I don't usually use that word, but really. Her face) The border won't fit. The hst's will get cut unevenly. You have to do the MATH!

Me: Um, no really, it will be fine. I'm doing it on purpose. It's very liberating, blah, blah, blah.

I had lost her. It was unthinkable that I would purposefully NOT measure and just whack a row of blocks in mid block. Oh silly lady. Sometimes you gotta just bend a little bit. Besides, I've been sewing since I was eight (Here. I'll do the math. That's almost 50 years), this isn't my first rodeo, and if I want to chop up blocks, then it's all on me. I love my Tulip quilt as is.

No matter what your age, just go make something today. And whack the hell out of it.Lynnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15467650220067047943noreply@blogger.com17tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6474107277810710594.post-32309362346224334562016-01-21T16:27:00.000-08:002016-01-21T16:27:26.687-08:00Quilt finish and cleaning up

Hello everyone. Welcome back! The dogs and I are sharing a bowl of popcorn while I wait for these pictures to load up. The computer seems awfully slow today. There was a repair crew working on the lines when I walked down to get the mail. Wind, water or chewing squirrels are usually responsible for a slow Internet around here.
I finished the first of my Hudson Bay camp blankets that I started back in October. I love the deer fabric on the back, wish I had more of it. I had to beg my daughter to come outside and hold the quilt up for pictures when there was a brief 25 second window in between rain showers. The last storm that came through was a doozy, and we lost several branches off our birch trees due to high winds. The yard was a complete mess afterwards. So I spent yesterday raking and sweeping and tidying only to find out we have more of the same coming in tonight. Guess I could have waited but the sun was shining and it felt good to get outside in the fresh air.
Its hard to believe that just a few months ago the ground and vegetation here was crispy, dry and crunchy. Now our small seasonal pond which collects the runoff water is full, and there are mushrooms sprouting all over!
The last picture is a three pack of blank journals that I bought when I was out Christmas shopping. I have dedicated one to crochet/knitting, one to quilting, and the last to random ideas in general, although it seems to be leaning more toward gardening at the moment. The crochet/knitting has come in handy already, as I am logging in my projects listing the hook/needle and yarn type. I am notorious for grabbing a crochet hook from a half finished project to start something new, then come back to the old project <strike>months</strike> weeks later and then can't remember what size hook I was using.
Of course it could all be much simpler if I just stuck to one thing at a time (or bought a bazillion hooks and needles in every size), but where's the fun in that?
